“Afraid and shattered, big pharma companies are urging people to stay away from the unregulated zone of pills that are reported to have killed thousands of people due to hazardous chemicals and traces of cancer causing elements found in the bottle of famous weight loss supplement.”
Don’t frighten. This isn’t a snippet from a famous newspaper article. However, it’s a fantasy of every big pharma company today because their monotony in market has been challenged by small but fastest growing nutraceuticals companies.
2017 closed at $386.06 billion from nutraceutical business globally that includes functional foods, drinks and supplements. Upon research by IQVIA, global spending on pharmaceutical drugs is estimated to be $1.135 trillion.
There’s no way to shrug off this exponential increase in former as if the trend continues it would overpower the Pharma Industry within a short span of time. To know why the trend shift is occurring, keep reading.
You may be unbeknowst to the fact but it’s – FDA!
Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is the governing agency that takes care of defining safety precautions and procedures that are termed as “Standards” and anything below that would be rejected. Being called ‘unfit’ to consume is a bigger loss of brand image than profit. This is why, for a long time, anti-herbal medicine squad asked officials to upgrade the rules that bring natural supplements under the stringent testing methods like all other chemical drugs.
What would happen if FDA drags seemingly unharming industry under the similar code of conduct?
Until now, Big Herba companies enjoyed freedom on larger scale but as per the new suggestion, it won’t stay for long. An anti-inflammatory medicine, Celebrex is known to cost $6.73 per tablet. When compared to a generic herbal supplement for inflammation, a pill costs just $0.25. This huge price gap is the first reason for the drifting population towards herbs. The first impact of FDA’s harsh regulations will occur on costs which would then be raised by the manufacturers due to testing costs incurred at first place. Also, Pharma companies will swell in benefits due to reduced competition.
What’s the truth behind of saving Pharma World by regulating agency?
Mafias of Pharma world are hidden under white collars and have powers under their hands. Sponsoring and funding political rallies, indirect support to influential personalities and a lot of ‘side-business’ on name of goodwill have been taking under the big names. Nobody is in position to risks benefits on such enormous level. The government, agree or not, has kept these Pharma Mafias under high-end safety.
In the article, “Death By Medicine”, five doctors* collaborated to write the text and quoted, “Something is wrong when regulatory agencies pretend that vitamins are dangerous, yet ignore published statistics
showing that government-sanctioned medicine is the real hazard.
*Gary Null, PhD; Carolyn Dean MD, ND; Martin Feldman, MD; Debora Rasio, MD; and Dorothy Smith, PhD
In their text, they’ve mentioned that 700,000+ people die from government-sanctioned medicines while FDA and other regulatory agencies crib about the dangers of vitamin supplements.
Also, the fatality rate due to medication reaction has shown a significant surge as 24% of patients have reported to receive incorrect medicine from pharmacies. On the other hand, there has been no report of direct toxication of herbal supplement causing fatality.
DSHEA defines and regulates the products other than ‘tobacco’ which contain ingredients like vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acid and/or dietary substance that are taken in order to replenish health. To the common belief that nutraceuticals don’t go through a safety measure, DSHEA is the answer.
Competing with big pharma isn’t an easy battle to win but consistent efforts are made to make sure people’s aversion from chemical treatment. Herbs are enhanced, amplified and formulated so that they cater your problems faster than their present reputation. More research and investment would open up doors for herbal and natural treatment. However, to change the scenario, big herba companies needs to be supported and backed by government and its customers.
